Welcome everyone! I have such exciting news to share with you all today, because the first ever Scheepjes KAL (Yes! KNIT-a-long) is starting on February 23rd!! We have been working on this knit-a-long for quite some time, and it feels so good to finally be sharing it. During the KAL, you will be knitting a set of two beautiful cushion covers. In this blogpost, you will find all of the information you need to know about the Sassenach KAL: the story behind the name, which Scheepjes yarn we will be using, where to get support, when the KAL will start and of course “will there be videos??” – yes, there will be 😉

Welkom iedereen! Ik heb zo’n leuk nieuws met jullie te delen, want de allereerste Scheepjes KAL (ja, KNIT-a-long) gaat van start op 23 februari!! We zijn al een hele tijd bezig geweest met deze knit-a-long, en het is zo ontzettend spannend om het dan eindelijk bekend te maken. Tijdens de KAL brei je een set van twee prachtige kussenslopen. In deze blogpost vind je alles wat je maar wilt weten over de Sassenach KAL: het verhaal achter de naam, welke Scheepjes garens we gaan gebruiken, waar je om hulp kunt vragen, wanneer de KAL start en natuurlijk “komen er ook video’s??” – jazeker, die komen er 😉

About the designer | Over de ontwerper

First of all, I want to welcome you very warmly to my corner of the internet – New Leaf Designs. My name is Carmen, I’m Dutch, 30 years old, and live in the south of the Netherlands with my boyfriend Tim and our cat Momo. I have been designing knitting and crochet patterns for almost 10 years, and have been doing that as my fulltime job since 2019! You might know me from the Cosy Moments Shawl Make-a-long in 2020. Making something out of a string of yarn and needles is like magic, I love that we can still create things with our hands in this world that is getting more and more digital.
My designing career started out with crochet amigurumi, but nowadays my passion lies in knitting stranded colourwork, and that is precisely what I want you to experience in this knit-a-long. Stranded colourwork is so beautiful, and you will be so proud of your work!

Maar eerst wil ik jullie allemaal van harte welkom heten in mijn hoekje van het internet – New Leaf Designs. Mijn naam is Carmen, ik ben Nederlands, 30 jaar, en woon samen met mijn vriend Tim en onze kat Momo in Limburg. Al zo’n 10 jaar ben ik bezig met het ontwerpen van brei- en haakpatronen, en sinds 2019 mag ik dat als fulltime baan doen! Je kent me misschien van de Cosy Moments Shawl make-a-long in 2020. Iets maken met naald en draad is echt magisch voor mij, ik vind het zo bijzonder dat we in een steeds digitaler wordende wereld dingen met onze handen kunnen creeëren. 
Mijn ontwerpcarriëre begon vooral met amigurumi haakprojecten, maar nu ligt mijn passie veel meer bij jacquard breien, ook wel kleurwerk breien genoemd. En dat is precies wat ik jullie wil laten zien tijdens deze knit-a-long. Jacquard breien is een hele mooie techniek, en je zult zo trots zijn op je werk!

The inspiration | De inspiratie

I know you might be thinking: Sassenach? What is that? Well, in order to explain it properly I have to go back a few steps. For this knit-a-long, I wanted to create something I had never designed before. I love blankets and shawls, but I really wanted something new for this KAL. So I decided to design a set of cushions! This is perfect for stranded colourwork since you can knit them in the round, and you don’t have to worry about sizing so much. The people at Scheepjes and I wanted to draw our inspiration from an epic love story. Since there are two cushions in a set, each of the cushions would symbolize one of the people in the story.

At the time, I was watching the TV show Outlander and I was completely smitten with the story. It is a classic tale of star crossed lovers, who have to overcome challenge after challenge if they want to be together. A fair warning if you want to go and watch it, because Season 2 will have you bawling your eyes out! I was so emerged in this story that when the idea came up of designing a set of cushions to symbolize a love story, I didn’t have to think twice before settling on Claire and Jamie from Outlander.
To get back to the name of this knit-a-long: ‘Sassenach’ means ‘outlander’ or ‘foreigner’ in Gaelic, and during the TV show it is Jamie’s nickname for Claire. First to tease her, but after a while it becomes a term of endearment.

I have so much more to say about the inspiration behind this project, so keep your eyes open for a separate blogpost about this.

Ik hoor je al denken: “Maar wat is Sassenach?” Daarvoor moet ik eerst een aantal stapjes teruggaan. Voor deze knit-a-long wilde ik iets nieuws ontwerpen, iets wat ik nog nooit had gedaan. Ik hou van dekens en omslagdoeken, maar ik wilde het liefst iets ontwerpen wat niet direct voor de hand ligt. Dus besloot ik om een set kussens te ontwerpen! Dit is perfect voor jacquard breien want je kunt ze in het rond maken, en je hoeft je ook niet zoveel zorgen te maken over de maat. De mensen bij Scheepjes en ik wilden onze inspiratie opdoen in een episch liefdesverhaal. Omdat er twee kussens zijn in een set, zou elk van de kussens dan één van de mensen in het verhaal symboliseren.

Tegen die tijd was ik enorm fan van de TV serie Outlander, een klassiek verhaal van twee geliefden die hindernis na hindernis moeten overwinnen om bij elkaar te zijn. Een kleine waarschuwing als je hem ook gaat kijken, want Seizoen 2 is een tranentrekker! Ik zat zo in het verhaal dat toen het idee naar voren kwam om een set kussens te ontwerpen om een liefdesverhaal te symboliseren, ik geen twee keer hoefde te denken: het moesten Claire en Jamie worden van Outlander. 
Om dan nog even terug te komen op de naam, ‘Sassenach’ is een Keltisch woord voor ‘buitenlander’, of ‘vreemdeling’. In de serie wordt Claire vaak zo genoemd door Jamie. Eerst om haar te plagen, daarna als koosnaampje. 

Ik heb nog zó veel meer te delen over de inspiratie achter dit project, dat ik hier binnenkort nog een andere blogpost aan ga wijden. 

Colourways | Kleurstellingen

And now, onto the yarn! We will be using Scheepjes Metropolis, my absolute favourite yarn. There will be kits in three different colourways: Rosa, Cirsium, and Erica – Latin names for flowers. On the picture above you can see all colourways next to each other. The two cushions on the left are from the Rosa kit, the center two cushions from the Cirsium kit, and the two on the right from the Erica kit.
Cirsium means thistle, which is the Scottish national flower, and Rosa means rose, which is the English national flower. Erica means heather, and symbolizes the link between heather fields where I live, and the heather fields in Scotland.

En nu, het garen! We gebruiken Scheepjes Metropolis, met stip op één mijn favoriete garen. De kits zullen er in drie verschillende kleurstellingen zijn: Rosa, Cirsium, en Erica – Latijnse bloemennamen. Op de foto hierboven zie je ze allemaal naast elkaar. De twee kussens links zijn van de Rosa kit, de twee in het midden van de Cirsium kit, en de twee rechts van de Erica kit. 
Cirsium betekent distel, en dit is de Schotse nationale bloem. Rosa betekent roos, de nationale bloem van Engeland. En Erica betekent heide, en symboliseert de connectie tussen de heidevelden uit mijn omgeving, en de heidevelden die ik zag in Schotland.

Tip: Metropolis Colour Pack

A challenge for the adventurious knitter who likes to puzzle with colours! The Sassenach KAL pillows would look amazing in the Scheepjes Metropolis Colour Pack. This pack includes all 80 colours in cute 10 gram balls. Please note this has not been tested yet, and you would need to do some serious puzzling for some of the colourwork charts, but if you love a whole rainbow of colours and like a challenge, this might just be the project for you. The pack contains more than enough yarn for the set of cushions. I have lots of tips and tricks for knitters who choose to knit with the colour pack, and will be posting either a video or blogpost about this in the upcoming weeks. This will include information on how much you can knit with each ball, a list of colour pairings, and what to do for larger charts where you need to combine several colours. Stay tuned for that! Een uitdaging voor de breier die graag puzzelt met kleuren! De Sassenach KAL kussens zouden er spectaculair uitzien met de Scheepjes Metropolis Colour Pack. Skill level and support| Brei niveau en hulp

The Sassenach KAL is designed for intermediate to advanced knitters. However, I don’t want to discourage any beginner knitters who want to give it a try. Before the KAL starts, I will post a tutorial video showing all the techniques used in the pattern. You don’t need to have any experience with stranded colourwork knitting, but you do need to be comfortable knitting on circular needles. Find more information about stranded colourwork knitting here.
I will have many tips and tricks along the way, and of course be sure to join the Scheepjes Facebook Group! It’s a super fun community where everyone is rooting for each other, and the admins, moderators and myself will be ready to help you when you have any questions. We will be cheering you on!

De Sassenach KAL is ontworpen voor gemiddeld tot gevorderde breiers. Ik weet echter dat er ook veel beginnende breiers staan te popelen om aan dit project te beginnen, en die zou ik toch willen uitnodigen om het te proberen. Voordat de KAL begint zal ik een tutorial video plaatsen waarin ik alle technieken behandel die in het project voorkomen. Je hebt geen ervaring nodig met jacquard breien, maar je moet wel comfortabel kunnen breien met rondbreinaalden. Vind hier meer informatie over jacquard breien. 
Gaandeweg zal ik je veel tips geven, en natuurlijk is het superleuk om lid te worden van de Scheepjes Facebook Groep! Dit is een superleuke community waar iedereen elkaar aanmoedigt. Samen met de admins en moderators zal ik klaar staan om bij te springen als er vragen zijn. Wij zijn jouw cheerleaders!

Videos

During this Knit-a-long, I will provide several tutorial videos to help you. Find the Tips and Tricks video here, which goes over all of the used techniques for the KAL. The practice project starts with some basic stranded colourwork, and then introduces new techniques one by one. This project will also double as a gauge swatch! Do you already want to start with practicing colourwork? Then read more here.
Further along in the KAL, I will post a tutorial video for sewing in the zipper. In the tutorial I am doing this with a sewing machine, but you can also sew by hand. I know this step might scare some people off, but I assure you it will make your project look even more professional.

Tijdens deze Knit-a-long zal ik verschillende video’s plaatsen om je op weg te helpen. Deze video’s zullen er ook in het Nederlands zijn. Het oefenproject begint met een simpel jacquard patroontje, en verder in het project leren we één voor één nieuwe technieken. Dit project is tegelijk je proeflapje! Later in de KAL komt een tutorialvideo over het plaatsen van de rits. In de tutorial gebruik ik een naaimachine, maar dit kun je ook prima met de hand doen. Ik weet dat dit misschien mensen afschrikt, maar het innaaien van een rits maakt je project echt helemaal af!

The KAL will start on February 23rd, when the first pattern part will be released. There will be 10 weeks in total, plus a bonus knitting project. I have lots more planned for the upcoming weeks, to keep you entertained while we wait for the KAL to begin. For now, have fun choosing a kit!
