Scheepjes KAL 2022 Week Nine | Week Negen

Week Nine of the Scheepjes KAL is here – or ‘Rose Week’ as I like to call it. Many of you have said the Rose chart was their favourite, and it’s difficult to argue with that! I’m really happy with this final version of the rose chart, this chart was one of the most difficult ones to get right. To have the outcome look like a rose without question, but to not make the stitch repeat too large.
For this week there’s lots of symbolism in the patterns, would you like to hear them? We’ll start with the first chart, which is another XO pattern. XO patterns are named because you can see an ‘X’ and an ‘O’ disguised in the pattern. They are often found in traditional Fair Isle patterns, which is why I included lots in Jamie’s cushion. Claire’s cushion has just this one XO chart, as a nod to her blending in with the Scots. The ‘O’ in this pattern is of course a flower because of Claire’s herbal knowledge.
The rose is perhaps the most obvious symbol, as it is the national flower of England, and points to Claire’s heritage. But what some might not know, is that a white rose was the symbol for the Jacobites – also the ‘Jacobite Rose’. In the story of Outlander, Jamie and Claire work alongside others in hopes of restoring Bonnie Prince Charlie to the throne. A little further on in the story, we see the character Geillis/Gillian rallying for a group in the 1960’s. And the name of that group? The White Roses!
The third chart of this week, although seemingly simple, holds the most symbolism. Did you know the first book by Diana Gabaldon is called ‘Cross Stitch’? It was later renamed as ‘Outlander’ when it was published outside of the UK. The original title was a word play on ‘a stitch in time’. Since Diana Gabaldon knew Claire was going to travel through the stones twice (making two stitches, forming a cross) she named it ‘Cross Stitch’. In the third chart, you see two lines of crosses, divided by a zigzag line going from side to side. I like to think that the crosses on one side represent Frank, Claire’s husband in the present; and the other line of crosses represent Jamie, Claire’s husband in the past. The zigzag line represents time.

Het is tijd voor Week Negen van de Scheepjes KAL – ook wel Week van de Rozen! Van velen heb ik gehoord dat ze het Rozen schema het mooist vinden, en daar ben ik heel blij om. Het heeft een tijdje geduurd voordat ik tevreden was met dit schema, maar na heel wat schetsen en proeflapjes breien ben ik toch heel blij met het uiteindelijke resultaat. Het was best lastig om het er onmiskenbaar als een roos uit te laten zien, maar toch niet teveel steken in een herhaling te hebben.
Voor deze week zijn er ook weer heel veel symbolen verstopt in de schema’s, wil je erover horen? We beginnen met het eerste schema, wat weer een ‘XO’ patroon is. XO patronen heten zo omdat je een ‘X’ en een ‘O’ kunt herkennen in het patroon. Ze kwamen veel voor in traditionele Fair Isle patronen, en daarom heb ik er veel verwerkt in Jamie’s kussen. Claire’s kussen heeft ook een XO schema, als een verwijzing dat ze is ingeburgerd als een echte Schotse. De ‘O’ in dit patroontje is een bloem, als symbool voor Claire’s kennis van flora. 
Bij de roos ligt de symboliek erg voor de hand, want het is namelijk de nationale bloem van Engeland, en staat voor Claire’s afkomst. Wat je misschien niet weet, is dat een witte roos symbool staat voor de Jakobieten, en wordt in het Engels ook wel de ‘Jacobite Rose’ genoemd. In Outlander werken Jamie en Claire met de Jacobieten om hun ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’ weer op de troon te krijgen. Wat verder in het verhaal zien we het personage Geillis/Gillian leden werven voor haar pro-Schotse groep. En de naam van die groep is ‘The White Roses’!
Het derde schema van deze week ziet er wellicht het simpelst uit, maar heeft de meeste symboliek. Wist je dat het eerste boek uit de Outlander reeks oorspronkelijk ‘Cross Stitch’ heet? Diana Gabaldon wilde een verwijzing maken naar het Engelse gezegde ‘a stitch in time’. Omdat de schrijfster al wist dat Claire twee keer door de stenen zou reizen, en dus twee ‘steken’ zou maken, noemde ze het Cross Stitch (kruissteek). In het derde schema zie je twee rijen van kruisjes, gescheiden door een zigzaggende lijn. De ene rij kruisjes staat voor Frank, Claire’s geliefde in het heden; en de andere rij kruisjes staat voor Jamie, Claire’s geliefde in het verleden. De zigzaggende lijn staat voor de tijd.

Chart 29 | Schema 29

We start this week with a fairly easy chart, the floral XO chart. The first colourwork round is ‘one, two, one, two’, so that’s nice and easy as a setup row. As the chart is very symmetrical, it’s relatively simple to remember. As almost always with Fair Isle ‘XO’ charts, the center round is knit with different colours. If you’re in Team Free Spirit and knitting with your own colours, this round can be fun to use some really crazy colours. I’m teaching this in my Fair Isle workshops too, it’s just so fun to change the colours for that center round and see how they play with the rest. As it’s just one round, you can also get away with using a more subtle contrast for it.

Deze week beginnen we met een redelijk gemakkelijk schema, het florale XO schema. De eerste kleurwerk toer kun je onthouden als ‘een, twee, een, twee’, dus dat is lekker simpel. Omdat het schema voor de rest ook heel symmetrisch is, zal dit vrij gemakkelijk te onthouden zijn. Zoals bijna altijd met Fair Isle ‘XO’ patronen, gebruik je andere kleuren voor de middelste toer. Als je lid bent van Team Free Spirit en dus met je eigen kleurenpalet breit, is het heel leuk om hier wat ‘gekke’ kleuren te gebruiken voor deze toer. In mijn Fair Isle workshops laat ik ook zien hoe je heel andere kleuren kan gebruiken voor de middelste toer, en hoe leuk is om te zien hoe de kleuren met elkaar combineren. Omdat het slechts één toer is, kom je hier goed weg met een paar kleuren waar minder contrast in zit. 

The Roses | De Rozen

Chart 30 is the Rose chart! You’ll need your stitchmarkers again for this one as it’s not easy to memorize. I’ve made sure to spread out the pattern colour so that if you want, you can choose not to wrap your floats. The smaller shapes in between the big roses are meant to look like smaller flowers and flower buds. In the picture below, you can see my various swatches for the rose. The bottom left one – in brown and light blue – was the first one. Can you spot the one stitch difference with the other charts?

Schema 30 is het Rozen schema! Je hebt je stekenmarkeerders hier weer voor nodig want deze is best lastig. Ik heb ervoor gezorgd dat de patroonkleur goed verdeeld is, zodat je geen draden hoeft in te pakken als je dat niet wilt. Tussen de rozen zie je nog kleinere bloemetjes en knoppen, al zijn deze niet helemaal zo goed uitgekomen als de roos zelf. Hieronder op de foto zie je mijn proeflapjes voor de roos. Linksonder zie je in het lichtblauw en bruin een van de eerste proeflapjes, zie jij het verschil met de rest?

Chart 31 | Schema 31

For the third chart this week, the first and last colourwork rounds are easily memorized as ‘four, one, four, one’. The other rounds are also pretty easy to remember, so I doubt you’ll have any trouble with this one.

Het derde schema van deze week is redelijk gemakkelijk. De eerste en laatste kleurwerk toer kun je onthouden als ‘vier, een, vier, een’. De rest van het schema zal jullie waarschijnlijk ook goed afgaan.
