Coming Soon – the Meander Scarf Knitting Pattern

Don’t you just love casting on for a scarf or shawl? Such a small piece of knitting, so many possibilities to follow! For this scarf pattern, I went with an i-cord cast on because it’s such a nice and crisp way to finish off scarf edges.

The Inspiration

So, I could spin you a poetic story about a rose petal that inspired the whole colour palette – but in real life it’s a lot less exciting! I visited Weku Yarn‘s stand during the Woolly Good Gathering (blogpost here) and I simply fell in love with these colours. The colours spoke to me, they ended up working together, and ever since putting together this colour palette I’ve just been seeing these colours everywhere. Do you also have that sometimes, when perhaps a family member gets a new car and you think ‘wow, I’ve never seen that colour on a car before’, and in the week afterwards you spot the same colour car so many times? Well, that’s kind of what happened with this colour palette. I still think it’s kind of mad that the rose petals from our own garden match the scarf so perfectly.

Colour Options

Of course, there are MANY more colour palette options for this scarf. I will always encourage knitters to put together their own colour combinations and knit outside the box. In next week’s blogpost I’ll showcase some colour inspiration and some helpful do’s and don’ts.

The stranded colourwork for this scarf is going to be quite simple. I went for a bold motif with lots of texture. The difficulty lies in that this pattern will be back-and-forth colourwork. Yes that’s right! I’ve been loving flat knitted colourwork for years now, it’s such a great way to improve your colourwork tension; something that you’ll reap the benefits of in your in-the-round projects as well. And since you’re probably thinking it – YES there will be a tutorial video (woohoo!). The tutorial will be absolutely FREE to watch, even though the pattern will be a paid PDF pattern. This way you can watch the tutorial video to have a play with the techniques, before you commit to buying the pattern.

Materials

For this scarf, I used 4 colours of DK weight wool yarn, 50 grams of each colour. The yarn I used is Weku Yarns Bukom DK, which comes to about £9.50 per 50g ball. Weku Yarns is taking a short holiday break so check back after August 1st to order their yarns. Of course you can also use other DK weight yarns, or you can even go rogue and use a different weight yarn alltogether. Make a sockyarn version, or a chunky version! Just be aware that you’ll probably need more than 50 grams of each colour in those cases.

For the DK weight version, I used 4mm needles, but do note that you may need a different needle size to get the same gauge.
