Scheepjes KAL 2022 Week Seven | Week Zeven

Welcome to Week Seven of the Scheepjes Knit-a-Long 2022! We are knitting the Claire cushion, the second cushion in this knit-a-long. If you are looking for the instructions for Jamie’s cushion, find them in Weeks 1-5 in the purple table below. For Claire, I decided to also incorporate a tartan pattern in the cushion design. Even though she is an Englishwoman, she becomes a Scot by marrying Jamie – and thereby becoming untouchable by Jack Randall.
In the design process, I worked on Jamie’s cushion first since I had the most inspiration for that design. All of the traditional Scottish Fair Isle and Tartan patterns gave me a lot of ideas, so it was easier to design that one first. One of the tartan patterns I drafted is the one we are knitting this week. I decided to use it for Claire’s cushion rather than Jamie’s, because I thought it had a feminine look. It reminds me of the plaid dress or the tartan shawl Claire often wears.
And do you see the little pattern above the tartan in the cover photo? The one where you see a ‘plus’ and then an oval shape? That pattern is inspired by Claire’s wedding ring that Jamie made from the Lallybroch key, in the TV adaptation of Outlander. In the books, the ring has the highland interlace pattern with thistles, but in the series it’s a simple wedding band with a small vertical bar. If you see it from the front, that looks like a plus sign.

Welkom bij Week Zeven van de Scheepjes Knit-a-Long 2022! We breien nu aan het Claire kussen, het tweede kussen van de KAL. Als je naar de patronen voor Jamie’s kussen zoekt, kijk dan hieronder in de paarse tabel naar Weken 1-5. Voor Claire besloot ik ook een Schotse ruit patroon in het ontwerp toe te voegen. Ook al is ze Engelse van geboorte, wordt ze een Schotse als ze met Jamie trouwt – en beschermt zich daarmee ook direct voor Jack Randall.
In het ontwerpproces schetste ik eerst de schema’s voor Jamie’s kussen, omdat ik daar de meeste inspiratie voor had. Al die mooie traditionele Schotse Fair Isle patronen en Schotse ruiten maakten het gemakkelijk om patronen te kiezen. Een van de Schotse ruit patronen die ik had geschetst breien we deze week. Ik koos deze voor Claire’s kussen, omdat het er op de een of andere manier vrouwelijker uitziet dan de andere ruit patronen die we al hebben gebreid. Het deed me ook denken aan de geruite jurk en omslagdoek die Claire vaak draagt.
Zie je ook het kleine patroontje boven de Schotse ruit, in de foto hierboven? Waar je een plusje en een ovaal langs elkaar ziet? Dat patroon is geïnspireerd op de trouwring die Jamie aan Claire geeft, gemaakt van de Lallybroch sleutel. In de boeken heeft de ring veel details, met een golvend patroon met distels ertussen, maar in de TV serie is het een simpele trouwring met een verticaal detail erop. Als je die van voren ziet, lijkt het net een ‘plus’.

Je vindt Deel 7 van het Scheepjes KAL patroon hier op de Scheepjes website. Je ziet eerst ‘Week 7’ staan in het rood, en daaronder ‘Instructies’ in zwarte tekst. Daaronder is het patroon gelinkt als een PDF. Klik op de tekst, en het PDF opent zich. Let weer op de volgorde van de schema’s. Je breit eerst Schema 21 dat linksboven staat, dan Schema 22 aan de rechterkant, dan Schema 23 dat linksonder staat. Je kunt het patroon ook vinden in de Scheepjes Facebook Groep. Als je liever een inkleur-versie hebt zodat je die zelf in kan kleuren, kijk dan hieronder.

If you want to print out your colouring chart, click here for the PDF version. For the tartan chart, you can get away with a little less contrast as the lines are very clear in the pattern. For those knitting with a Scheepjes Metropolis mini pack, this is a good one to use a subtler contrast for.

Als je de inkleur versie graag wilt uitprinten, klik dan hier voor de PDF versie. Voor het Schotse ruit patroon hoef je deze keer niet persé hoog contrast te gebruiken omdat de lijnen heel duidelijk zijn. Voor diegenen die breien met een Scheepjes Metropolis mini pack is dit een goed schema om een van de subtielere contrastparen te gebruiken.

Chart 21 | Schema 21

This first chart may look easy, but looks can deceive. Pay close attention to the first round, as the first round – kind of the ‘setup’ round – is often the easiest to trip up on. And again, hold the pattern colour left, background colour right.

Dit eerste schema ziet er misschien gemakkelijk uit, maar je moet alsnog goed opletten. Vooral in de eerste toer, daar kruipen foutjes er al snel in. En nogmaals, houd de patroonkleur links en de achtergrondkleur rechts.

Wrapping floats | Garens inpakken

For the tartan chart, you may want to wrap floats for the rounds where you have 5 consecutive stitches of a colour. Please do note my previous warning: don’t wrap in the same stitch column. So even though the center column of the ‘block’ seems a perfect place to wrap floats, if you do that every round it’s going to show on the outside. For this chart, I did not wrap my floats at all, as you can see in the picture below. If you’re feeling confident enough to do that, please go ahead. Do note that the not wrapping of floats works best with Scheepjes Metropolis or another wool yarn.

Voor het Schotse ruit schema wil je misschien garens inpakken voor de toeren waar je 5 opeenvolgende steken van één kleur hebt. Maar, net zoals ik in een vorige blogpost waarschuwde: pak je garens niet telkens in dezelfde stekenkolom in, dan zie je dat aan de voorkant. Dus zelfs al lijkt het midden van het ‘blokje’ de perfecte plaats om de achtergrondkleur in te pakken, zorg dat je het garen de volgende toer op een andere steek inpakt. Als je naar de onderstaande foto kijkt, zie je dat ik mijn garens helemaal niet heb ingepakt voor dit schema. Nu je wat ervaring hebt met kleurwerk breien kun je dit ook proberen. Let wel dat het niet inpakken van garens het beste uitkomt met Scheepjes Metropolis of een ander wollen garen.

Chart 23 – Schema 23

For Chart 23, the ‘Lallybroch ring’ chart, please note that there are some rounds where you knit five stitches of a colour directly after each other. Again, I did not wrap my floats here, but you might want to.

Voor Schema 23, het ‘Lallybroch ring’ schema, zijn er ook enkele toeren waar je vijf opeenvolgende steken van dezelfde kleur breit. Ik heb de garens hier niet ingepakt, maar dat kun je natuurlijk wel doen.
