Scheepjes Terrazzo

Have you seen the newest Scheepjes yarn – Terrazzo? This beautiful new addition to the Scheepjes yarn family was introduced a couple of weeks ago, and I already have so many design ideas for it. It is the perfect weight – DK weight – for sweaters, shawls and hats, not to mention cushions and cuddly toys. It consists of 70% mulesing free, recycled wool, and 30% recycled viscose. Scheepjes Terrazzo also has cute tweed flecks in different colours. Some have black and blue tweed dots, some have pink, some have green, and it just gives so much more depth to the yarn. As opposed to other tweed yarns I have seen and worked with, the tweed flecks don’t come out, so you won’t have to worry about them disappearing after a wash. This yarn can be washed on 30 degrees Celsius, I would personally still wash it by hand but you can always throw your swatch in with a 30 degree wash in the machine to see the effect on the yarn.

Heb je al van het nieuwste Scheepjes garen – Terrazzo – gehoord? Deze mooie nieuwe aanvulling op de Scheepjes garens werd een paar weken geleden geintroduceerd, en ik barst nu al van de ideeën! Het is de perfecte dikte (voor ongeveer 4mm naalden) voor truien, sjaals, mutsen, en ook natuurlijk kussens en knuffels. Het bestaat voor 70% uit gerecyclede mulesing-vrije wol, en 30% gerecyclede viscose. Scheepjes Terrazzo heeft ook schattige tweed vlekjes in verschillende kleuren: zwart, wit, blauw, roze, groen.. Het voegt zoveel diepte toe! En, in tegenstelling tot andere tweed garens, gaan deze tweed vlokjes niet zomaar uit het garen, ze zitten er echt ín. Dus je hoeft niet bang te zijn dat je project ‘tweed-vrij’ is na een wasbeurt. Je kunt het garen op 30 graden wassen, al zou ik dit persoonlijk alsnog met de hand doen. Als je het in de machine wilt wassen, probeer dan eerst met je proeflapje zodat je kunt zien wat het effect is.

After doing some swatching, I realised Scheepjes Terrazzo is the perfect yarn for my next design idea. I wanted to create a simple hat that would also be wearable for the summer. In the photo above I’m wearing the hat project while it was still in progress, although from this angle it looks like I had finished it already!

Na het breien van enkele proeflapjes wist ik dat Scheepjes Terrazzo perfect zou zijn voor mijn volgende ontwerp dat ik al in gedachten had. Ik wilde een simpele muts ontwerpen die ik ook in de zomer op kan doen. In de foto hierboven draag ik de muts terwijl hij nog op de naalden stond, al zou je zeggen dat hij af was!

These are a few of my existing hat patterns, the Home Hat (left), Finn Hat (middle) and Striped & Stranded Hat (right). Although I love these very much, I think they are too wintery to wear in summer. You might think, but why would you want to wear a hat anyway in summer? Well, as of last year we have a convertible car which we love to drive in sunny weather, but it does get quite cold with the wind swooping past your head all the time. So, a new hat was in order.

Dit zijn een paar van mijn muts patronen, de Home Hat (links), Finn Hat (midden) en de Striped and Stranded Hat (rechts). Hoewel ik deze allemaal heel mooi vind, vind ik ze ook te winters om in de zomer te dragen. Ik hoor je al denken, maar waarom wil je in de zomer een muts dragen? Nou, sinds afgelopen jaar hebben we een cabrio, en we rijden er graag in op zonnige dagen. Dat is toch wel heel koud met de wind die steeds langs je hoofd strijkt, dus dacht ik: ik brei een nieuwe muts!

To give the simple ribbed hat – which I’ve decided to call the Highland Hat – a little bit of ‘extra’, I decided to go for a tubular cast on. It has worked even better than I have imagined, and my testers are quite enjoying it too! It just gives a beautiful seamless edging, as if the inside continues seamlessly onto the outside. The tubular cast on is a little challenging, as the way I do it starts with Judy’s Magic Cast On, but it really makes for a crisp edge and I am keen to design many more patterns with this cast on. Om deze simpele muts – die ik heb besloten de Highland Hat te noemen – iets extra’s te geven, besloot ik om de Tubular opzet te gebruiken, ook wel de ‘tube’ opzet. Je begint namelijk met een tube, waarvan je in twee richtingen verder breit. Het geeft een prachtige rand aan je werk, omdat het eruit ziet alsof de binnenkant naadloos overgaat in de buitenkant. Het is wel een uitdaging, vooral omdat mijn versie begint met Judy’s Magic Cast On, maar het resultaat mag er echt zijn. Ik kijk er nu al naar uit om deze opzetmethode bij andere ontwerpen te gebruiken. Patreon abonnees hebben al toegang tot de tutorial video!

The decreases did not work out as I had hoped when I first knit them, so I put in a lifeline before starting the decreases. Hurray for lifelines! I could unravel easily back to the starting point of the decreases, and knit them again. You see, I wanted the knit columns to kind of ‘merge’ together at the decrease line, but instead I managed to make the purl stitches between them more prominent. So I did that again.

De minderingen zagen er niet zo uit als ik had gehoopt, maar gelukkig had ik een levenslijn ingebracht voordat ik ze breide. Hoera voor de levenslijn! Zo kon ik gemakkelijk terug uithalen tot het begin van de minderingen, en vanuit daar verder breien. Ik wilde namelijk dat de kolommen met rechte steken in elkaar zouden overgaan, maar in plaats daarvan kregen de averechte steken ertussen juist meer aandacht. Dat moest even opnieuw.

Deze foto is van mijn tweede poging, waar ik al heel tevreden over was! Je ziet dat ik nog een extra levenslijn had ingebracht voor het geval dat ik het weer uit wilde halen. 

And then as I laid my knitting aside, my design process was rudely interrupted by my cat Momo, who demanded I stop knitting and give her treats instead. Well alright then 😉
