Scheepjes KAL 2022 – Week Ten

Scheepjes KAL 2022 Week Ten | Week Tien

Welcome to the tenth and final week of the Scheepjes KAL 2022 – the Sassenach KAL. Can you believe it’s the last week? The Knit-a-Long has flown by for me, it has been so much fun! And as many are knitting the cushions at their own pace, I’m hoping to still see pictures of knitting progress for the next coming weeks and maybe even months, as people continue to knit on their projects. Some have even started a second set! Before I get into the stories behind this week’s charts, I wanted to ask you something. If you want to stay up-to-date with all of my newest patterns and tutorial videos, be sure to subscribe to my newsletter as you won’t miss anything then. On May 9th, I will be publishing the free bonus pattern for the KAL, and there are many more patterns coming this year!

Inspiration | Inspiratie

This week, we have five different patterns, of which the last one is the ‘crosses and boxes’ chart we’ve knit for the beginning and end of each cushion. As the first four patterns all have the same stitch repeat, you can find them all together in Chart 32. First, I want to look at Rounds 1-3 and 17-19, which I like to call the ‘Cowrie pattern’. Do you know cowrie shells (also spelled cowry)? You might not know them by name, but I’m sure you’ve seen them. I’ve included a picture of them in the collage below. This wasn’t actually intentional that the pattern came out looking like cowrie shells, more like a happy accident. I think it works quite well, not only because I really like cowrie shells, but also because it reminds me of the sea travels that Jamie and Claire experienced, and when they finally arrive on the Jamaican shores.

I think you’ll really like the next one! The big chart, of Rounds 4-16, is what I call the ‘Gemstone chart’. Gemstones play a vital part in the Outlander TV series, because they are used to travel in time through the stones. Not only that, you also need some kind of genetic ability to travel through the stones. If a character is able to travel through the stones, their children will be able too. When Claire finds Geillis (Gillian’s) journals in the 1960’s, they find out that gems are used as protection for time travel. So it might not be that you need them, but that it gives you a better chance of arriving safely. The gemstones aren’t mentioned as being necessary in the books however, only in the TV adaptation. I find it a really nice addition to the story, the idea that the stones need some kind of mineral payment for time passage. There is also a fan theory that the stones aren’t necessary for time travel, but that using specific stones can help you determine which year you will travel to.

And then lastly, the clover is another nod to Claire’s knowledge of plants, and I also just really like clovers 🙂 A nice simple chart just before the end of the cushion.

Tips for this Week | Tips voor deze Week

Cowrie Chart | Cowrie Schema

We start nice and easy with the cowrie chart. The first and last colourwork rounds, after the setup stitches, are memorized as ‘three, three, three..’, very easy to remember.

Gemstones or Flowers? | Edelsteen of Bloem?

For the big chart, I also wanted to show you that you can see it in two ways. Either as a gemstone, or as a flower with four petals. Which is your favourite? If you enjoy the book series of Outlander more than the series, I can imagine you might not really feel drawn to the gemstones, so feel free to see them as flowers instead – or something else entirely?
For this chart, you might need your stitchmarkers again to make it a little easier. For the first colourwork round, I have a nice way to memorize it. After the first couple of stitches, it’s “two one two; three one three”.

Clovers | Klavers

After the big clover chart, these clovers are a piece of cake for you! Please note that in the middle round, you have one stitch of the pattern colour and five of the background colour. If you want, you can wrap the pattern colour. Also make sure you’re holding the pattern colour to the left of the background colour, so that the clovers stand out.

Sewing the zipper | De rits naaien

After all the knitting is complete, be sure to follow the instructions for the cast off. Don’t forget to switch to smaller needles for the non-colourwork portion! Some of you have been super clever and left the bottom of the cushion open to insert the zipper, in that case just knit two or three non-colourwork rounds on top and sew it closed with the kitchener stitch.

Share your makes | Deel jouw creatie

Oh my goodness, you did it!! You completed the very first Scheepjes KAL! I am so very proud of each and every one of you who have knit these cushions, or perhaps started to knit them and didn’t feel up to finishing them – I’m still proud of you! There were so many challenges in this knitting project: keeping your sanity as you cast on 284 stitches with probably the most advanced cast on method ever; finding your rhythm in colourwork knitting; and then the pesky zipper! Not to mention all of the clever and creative adaptations I have seen, I am blown away!
Please do keep sharing your Scheepjes Knit-a-Long makes. You can create a project page on Ravelry, or share pictures on social media with the hashtags #ScheepjesKAL2022 and #SassenachKAL. I hope you had loads of fun during this knit-a-long, and that you will continue to knit! Please do keep an eye out for the free pattern coming to my website on May 9th, you won’t want to miss it 🙂
