Around the World colourwork sweater
Meet the “Around the World” Sweater! I finally finished it, and even though I haven’t blocked the sleeves yet I thought to try it on for you. The pattern is coming next week! I’m super excited about this one because I always wanted to design a yoked sweater, and the colourwork is just such a treat to knit! The yarn I used is Scheepjes Metropolis, a gorgeous sock yarn that is also perfect for sweaters with its 75% extra fine merino and 25% nylon. The nylon makes it really sturdy so items made out of this yarn will last a good while. And a bonus: I can make a pair of socks from the leftovers I have from this sweater!
The name “Around the World” comes from the colourway names of the Metropolis yarn range. Each colour is named after a city somewhere on this planet, and I thought it was a nice idea to “travel” to these places via yarn, especially now when we can’t visit them for real.
Dit is de “Around the World” trui! Ik heb hem eindelijk af, en ook al heb ik de mouwen nog niet opgespannen dacht ik, ik doe hem toch al aan voor jullie! Het patroon zal ik volgende week vrijdag hier op mijn blog plaatsen. Ik ben zó blij met deze trui, ik wilde altijd al zo’n soort trui ontwerpen met kleurwerk. Het garen wat ik heb gebruikt is Scheepjes Metropolis, een prachtig sokkengaren dat ook perfect is voor truien met 75% extrafijne merino en 25% nylon. Het nylon zorgt voor dat beetje extra duurzaamheid in je trui dus je kunt hem een hele tijd dragen. En als bonus: je garenrestjes kun je gebruiken voor een paar sokken!
De naam “Around the World” komt van het Metropolis garen, waarbij elke kleur is vernoemd naar een stad op deze aardbol. Ik vond het een leuk idee om naar deze steden te ‘reizen’ via garen, vooral omdat we nu niet in het echt kunnen reizen.

Scheepjes Metropolis comes in 50 gram balls, 200 meters each which makes it a fingering sock weight yarn.
For this sample sweater I used the colours:
016 Karachi (dark green)
026 Depok (dark olive green)
035 Seoul (mustard)
055 Lima (bright purple)
054 Johannesburg (softer purple)
050 Bogotá (wine red)
019 Marseille (mint green)
For the size 32-34 inch that I knit, I used 2 balls of 050 Bogotá, and 1 ball each of all the other colours, so that is 400 grams in total. I don’t know yet how much yarn you would need for other sizes, I still need to calculate that and even then I might not be able to tell you exactly how many balls you need. It also depends on how many colours you will choose for your sweater. I used 7, but you might want to use less or more.
When you are shopping for yarns for this sweater, it’s a good idea to get an even amount of lighter versus darker shades, so you can use them together for the colourwork. Colours that are too close together will look ‘muddy’ in colourwork, and the pattern will not be visible. So it’s a good idea for example to get a really light blue and a dark blue to use together.

Scheepjes Metropolis is verkrijgbaar in bollen van 50 gram, waar elk 200 meter op zit. Dit is het standaard gewicht van een sokkengaren. Ik gebruikte de kleuren:

Voor de maat 32-34 inch (XS/S ongeveer) die ik maakte, had ik van 050 Bogotá 2 bollen nodig, en van de zes andere kleuren elk 1 bol, dat is 400 gram in totaal. Ik weet op het moment nog niet hoeveel garen je voor elke maat nodig hebt, dat moet ik nog berekenen en dan alsnog kan ik ernaast zitten. Het hangt er ook vanaf hoeveel kleuren je gebruikt. Ik gebruikte er 7, maar wellicht wil jij er minder of juist meer gebruiken.
Het is handig om hetzelfde aantal donkere als lichte tinten te gebruiken in jouw trui, zodat je ze samen kan gebruiken voor het kleurwerk. Kleuren die te dicht bij elkaar zijn laten het patroon niet goed naar voren komen en dit zal wat rommelig uitzien. Het is bijvoorbeeld een goed idee om voor heel lichtblauw en donkerblauw te kiezen.

The Around the World Sweater pattern is written for bust sizes 32 inch to 62 inch, in 2 inch increments (so 32, 34, 36 etc). This is roughly from XS to 5XL. The sweater is designed to have 2-4 inches of positive ease.
Het Around the World trui patroon is geschreven voor borstomtrek maten 80 cm tot 155 cm, met steeds 5cm tussen twee maten in. Dit is ongeveer van XS tot 5XL. Ik heb de trui ontworpen met 5-10 cm extra ruimte bij de borstomtrek, dus hij zal iets losjes zitten.

Will I be able to knit this sweater? | Kan ik deze trui breien?
The skill level for this sweater is intermediate. You do not need any experience with knitting sweaters, but I do suggest some experience with knitting colourwork. Knitting colourwork can be quite tricky at the beginning, and the tension might vary a lot when you are just starting out. That means your knitting might be tighter in some places, and looser in other places. For a sweater you really want a nice fit, so it’s important to have at least some experience with colourwork knitting. If you have never knit colourwork before, I have a Colourwork Confidence Masterclass on my Patreon page, where I show you all the basics of colourwork all the way to the more advanced techniques.
Deze trui is te doen voor de breier die de beginner-fase is ontgroeid. Je hoeft geen ervaring te hebben met truien breien, maar ik raad wel aan dat je ervaring hebt met kleurwerk breien (inbrei-patroontjes). Kleurwerk breien kan op het begin best lastig zijn en dit zorgt ervoor dat je draadspanning wat heen en weer gaat schommelen. Hier wat te strak gebreid, daar misschien wat te losjes, en dat zorgt voor een verschil in grootte. Voor een trui wil je een mooie pasvorm, en is het wel belangrijk dat je al comfortabel bent met kleurwerk breien zodat je dezelfde draadspanning kunt volhouden gedurende de hele trui. Stel nu dat je nog nooit kleurwerk hebt gebreid, dan is wellicht de Colourwork Confidence Masterclass wat voor jou. Dit zijn tutorial filmpjes op mijn Patreon pagina waar ik je meeneem door de beginselen van het kleurwerk breien en dan geleidelijker aan naar de moeilijkere technieken. De filmpjes zijn alleen in het Engels.
Now, full disclosure: I might have knit a 32 inch size sweater, but it’s actually way too small for me. My fault entirely as I cast on for the wrong size! Yep.. and I only found out after finishing the body. Oh well! What I mean to say is, just keep in mind when you knit the actual sweater from the pattern, it will not be quite as figure-hugging as this one. For yoked colourwork sweaters, it’s more comfortable to have a little bit of room in your sweater, because it can be quite tight on the upper arms.
Nou moet ik wel even bekennen, ik heb dan wel de maat 32/XS gebreid, maar deze is veel te klein voor mij. Geheel mijn schuld want ik was met de verkeerde maat begonnen! En daar kwam ik helaas pas achter toen ik het hele lijf al klaar had. Achja! Wat ik hiermee wil zeggen, is dat als je straks de trui volgens het patroon gaat breien, deze wat losser gaat uitzien dan bij mij nu op de foto. En dat is ook veel fijner, want je wilt namelijk wat bewegingsvrijheid voor je bovenarmen.
Scheepjes Metropolis Colour Pack
I am already knitting a second colourwork sweater and in the right size this time 😉 I am using the Scheepjes Metropolis colour pack for this one, which includes ALL 80 colours, 10 grams of each. A real treat for a colourwork knitter like me! I’m having so much fun picking colours for this one and knitting it up, it will be the same pattern but it will look completely different.
The colour pack includes 10 gram balls of all 80 colours, so you will have 800 grams of yarn in total = 3200 meters. That is quite a lot of yarn! For at least the first 8 sizes in the pattern I think you will be able to use the Metropolis colour pack and not need any additional yarns. It’s difficult to say from which size you will need additional 50 gram balls, but it’s better to be on the safe side and order a couple of 50 gram balls in colours you like, so you can use these for the background colour at the widest points in the sweater. You can still use the 10 gram balls from the colourpack for the contrast colours in the colourwork stripes. This way you will still have an awesome multicoloured sweater!

Ik ben al begonnen met een tweede trui, en deze keer wel in de goede maat! 😉 Ik gebruik hiervoor het Scheepjes Metropolis colour pack, waar ALLE 80 kleuren in zitten, 10 gram van elk. Een echte verwennerij voor een kleurwerk breier zoals ik! Het is ontzettend leuk om steeds weer kleurtjes bij elkaar te zoeken en te breien. Hoewel ik hetzelfde patroon brei, zal de trui er toch compleet anders uitzien.
Het colour pack heeft dus 10 gram bolletjes van elk van de 80 kleuren, dat is 800 gram en 32o0 meters in totaal. Best wat garen dus! Voor tenminste de eerste 8 maten in het patroon zul je het Metropolis colourpack kunnen gebruiken en geen tot weinig ander garen nodig hebben. Het is op het moment heel moeilijk te zeggen vanaf welke maat je wél extra garen nodig hebt. Maar ook voor de grotere maten kun je alsnog het colourpack gebruiken, al heb je waarschijnlijk wat 50 grams bolletjes nodig van enkele kleuren, zodat je die kunt gebruiken als de achtergrond kleuren van de strepen op de wijdste plekken van de trui. De mini bolletjes gebruik je dan als de contrastkleur in die strepen, en zo krijg je alsnog een geweldige trui met superveel kleuren!
