Modified Sunburst Square : The pattern!

Modified sunburst square crochet patternModified Crochet Sunburst Squares

This time I’m doing things a bit differently, I’m sharing a pattern with you before I have actually finished the project I’m making with it. This is possible because it’s a pattern for a single square, and I have to make lots before I can finish my project. For those of you who missed the first posts, I’m making decoration for the windows of my wardrobe closet! I need about 50 squares and although I’m almost done, I thought I’d share the pattern ahead of time with you guys. The pattern is a modified sunburst square, I’ve added a round to make the squares fit perfectly into the windows.

Of course you can use this pattern for many things! Maybe a pillowcase, bag, scarf, waistcoat or a blanket! Do you have another idea? Please share in the comments!

Garen / Yarn

For this project I used 8 colours Linen Soft yarn by Scheepjes:

Roomwit /Off white 630
Beige 613
Lichtbruin / Light Brown 620
Lavendel / Lavender 624
Paars / Purple 612
Donkerpaars / Dark Purple 602
Blauw / Blue 608
Geel / Yellow 610

In the squares I made sure to balance the harsh colours (white, dark purple, blue, yellow) and soft colours (beige, lavender, purple, light brown), I like a combination of both best.

Andere materialen / Other tools:

Haaknaald 3,5 mm – Crochet hook 3,5 mm
Schaar – Scissors
Naald – Darning needle

Gebruikte afkortingen / Used abbreviations (US)

l – losse    /  ch – chain
st – stokje   /   dc  –  double crochet
hst – half stokje   /   hdc – half double crochet
dst – dubbel stokje   /  tr – treble crochet

Uitleg speciale steken

Explanation Special Stitches

Puff Stitch – With this stitch you create several loops which form a loose bobble together, it’s a very airy stitch. It goes like this: *wrap yarn around hook, insert hook in stitch, pull up a loop*. You’ll repeat this sequence until you have enough loops on your hook. Doing it once results in 3 loops, do it twice and you have 5 loops, but for this pattern you’ll do it three times, so you have 7 loops on your hook. This video shows the technique very well, although it’s a different pattern.

Cluster Double Crochet – In round 3, you’ll make clusters of 4 double crochet stitches. The DC stitched are only worked halfway: yarn over, insert hook in stitch, pull up a loop, pull loop through 2 loops. Normally you would continue, but for now you leave it as it is. This is 1 DC worked halfway. Make 3 more of these, then yarn over and pull the loop through every loop on your hook. I hope this is clear enough. If not, please don’t hesitate to ask for help!

Het patroon / The pattern

IMG_8163

I drew the crochet chart for you, pictured above. For those of you who prefer a written pattern, I have also written instructions below. There are two less known stitches in this pattern, the puff stitch (the one in the second round), and cluster dc’s (third round). These stitches are explained above.

IMG_8167

Round 1 – start with a magic ring, ch3 (counts as first dc), 15 more dc in the ring. Close ring with a slip stitch, use the new colour for this, and pull tight. (16 sts)

IMG_8169

Round 2 – ch1, puff stitch (yarn over, insert hook, pull up loop 3 times, 7 loops on hook) in first dc, *ch1, puff in next dc* until end of round. Close with a slst in the first puff, use new colour for this.

IMG_8171

Round 3 – ch2, crochet the first cluster in the space to the right of the slip stitch, to cover up the join. The first cluster is one of 3dc, *ch2, 4dc cluster*, repeat till end round, sl st in the first cluster. Make a slip stitch in the first space after that with the new colour.

IMG_8173

Toer 4 – 2l, 2hst in dezelfde 2-lossen opening.

Round 4 – ch2, 2hdc in the same chain 2 space. *ch1, 3hdc in next chain 2 space*. Repeat till end row, sl st in 2nd chain and in the two hdc. Slip stitch in the space after that with the new colour.

finished sunburst square

Toer 5 – 2l, 2hst in dezelfde opening.

Round 5 – ch2, 2hdc in the same space, *3dc in the next space, 3tr – ch3 – 3tr in the next space, 3dc in the next space, 3hdc in the next space* repeat this until you’ve reached the end of the round. Skip the last 3hdc, instead of that make a slip stitch in the 2nd chain. Weave in the ends, and you’re done!

    Groetjes, Nadine.

Poeh daar vraag je me iets hoor.. Succes in ieder geval 🙂
