Breien met kleur

Vandaag ga ik jullie meenemen in mijn inspiratie voor mijn boek ‘Breien met kleur’ dat afgelopen oktober is verschenen. Wil je nog een exemplaar bestellen? Ik verkoop nu de laatste exemplaren nog via mijn eigen webshop, die ik zelf ook gesigneerd heb! Als die op zijn kun je het boek alsnog bij heel veel wolwinkels en boekenwinkels vinden.
‘Breien met kleur’ was voor de publicatiedatum al bijna twee jaar in de maak, en in die tijd heb ik véél proeflapjes gebreid en motiefjes getest om uiteindelijk uit te komen bij de motieven en kleurencombinaties die in het boek zijn verschenen.
Today I’m going to take you with me behind the scenes for my book ‘Breien met kleur’ (Knitting with colour) which was published in October. Only the Dutch version has been published for now, there are plans for translated versions but I don’t know the timeline. If you’re interested in a translated version, whether that’s English, French or any other language, please do contact a bookstore or yarn supplier in your country and mention my book, because this really helps speed things up if suppliers know there is demand for it.
During the designing process of creating this book, I have knitted lots and lots of swatches to test colour combinations and motifs after which I finally decided on which ones to keep in the book.
Moodboards
Als allereerste begon ik met het samenstellen van moodboards. Ik had een enorme stapel tijdschriften verzameld waar ik stuk voor stuk doorheen bladerde. Alle foto’s die mijn aandacht trokken knipte ik eruit, en zo had ik al snel een hele collectie knipsels met mooie kleurencombinaties. Maar de helft van die knipsels kwam uiteindelijk op mijn ‘moodboard’, wat een verzameling A4tjes was van stevig karton waar ik de knipsels op plakte.
Hierboven zie je bijvoorbeeld links een leuke quilt met verschillende blauwtinten, wit, roze, en een beetje mosterdgeel. Ik had van Scheepjes een klapper met staaltjes Scheepjes Metropolis in alle kleuren, die ik dan erbij probeerde te matchen. Dit was al een hele leuke activiteit op zich! Ik kwam op de kleuren 035 Seoul, 047 Dubai, 012 Manila en 007 Philadelphia. Uiteindelijk is dat de kleurencombinatie rechts op de foto geworden, met 061 Tokyo (lichtroze voor de boord), 047 Dubai en 007 Philadelphia voor de rest van de muts en wanten. En in de fotoshoot kwam dat mosterdgeel van het originele plaatje tóch weer even terug in de jas 😉
The very first step for the designing process was making a moodboard, which I absolutely love doing. I had collected a whole pile of magazines and I cut out every image that caught my eye. Very soon I had a whole range of snippets with beautiful colour combinations, and about half of them landed on my moodboard.
In the picture above you can see a pretty quilt on the left with various blue tones, white, pink and a hint of mustard yellow. I had the shade cards from Scheepjes Metropolis and matched the colours 035 Seoul, 047 Dubai, 012 Manila and 007 Philadelphia. I eventually settled on the colour combination on the right, which is 061 Tokyo (light pink), 047 Dubai and 007 Philadelphia. And in the photoshoot we were able to bring in that original hint of mustard yellow in the coat 😉
Vaak haal ik mijn kleurinspiratie niet uit één voorwerp, maar uit een samenstelling van meerdere voorwerpen zoals hierboven de gedekte tafel en het behang daarachter. Die combinatie van wijnrood en pastelblauw vond ik zo mooi! Ik kwam uit op de Scheepjes Metropolis kleuren (rechtsonder op de foto v.l.n.r.): 050 Bogotá, 061 Tokyo, 026 Depok en 019 Marseille. Voor de uiteindelijke combinatie die je links ziet, heb ik de laatst genoemde kleur nog gewisseld voor 018 Suwon.
Als het je nu heel leuk lijkt om zelf ook een moodboard te maken, dan kan dat natuurlijk! Je kunt het met tijdschriften maken of nog makkelijker met Pinterest bijvoorbeeld. En dan kun je zelf je eigen kleurcombinatie maken met Scheepjes Metropolis! Laat je creativiteit de vrije loop, het is zó leuk om zelf te spelen met kleur en je eigen unieke project te maken.
In the first example all colours were already shown in one object – the quilt – but most of the time I look at an image or several images together and see a group of objects that work really well together. Like the table setting on the picture above which matches really nicely with the minty green wallpaper behind it, I found it so inspiring! I matched it with Scheepjes Metropolis colours 050 Bogotá, 061 Tokyo, 026 Depok and 019 Marseille. In the end I swapped out the last colour for 018 Suwon.
If you would like to make your own moodboard, why not do it? It is so fun to do and very easy with some magazines, or even easier with Pinterest for example. Create your own colour combination with Scheepjes Metropolis and make a totally unique piece of knitwear!
