Have you ever worked with Scheepjes Mighty? It is a relatively new yarn of theirs, and is a cotton and jute mix. Due to this sturdy combination, you can make all sorts of wonderful home decoration items with it such as rugs or seat cushions. But for this new design, I’m going in a different direction.

When I received the yarn and was able to squish it with my own hands, I noticed it’s not as ‘rough’ as I had thought. The feel actually made me think of one of my favourite pairs of socks. Tough, so it holds its shape well, but still soft. The perfect pair to wear outside in my garden clogs.

Heb jij ooit met Scheepjes Mighty gewerkt? Het is een relatief nieuw garen van Scheepjes, en bestaat uit katoen en jute. Door deze combinatie van sterke vezels kun je er hele duurzame items van maken voor in je huis, zoals vloerkleden of zitkussens. Maar voor dit nieuwe ontwerp ga ik een heel andere kant op.

Toen ik dit garen voor het eerst ontving en het kon voelen met mijn eigen handen, viel mij op dat het helemaal niet zo ruw was als dat ik me had voorgesteld. Sterker nog, het deed me denken aan mijn favoriete paar sokken. Sterk, maar zacht. Het paar dat ik het liefst draag in mijn klompen voor in de tuin. 

I admit, it might be a bit crazy to make socks with jute yarn. But bear with me! I think they will actually be very nice. I’ll let you in on a small secret of mine. I love taking foot baths, and especially when I can treat my feet with some sort of scrub. Afterwards, I always want to wear socks immediately, and I always go for a nice thick pair of socks so that any remaining droplets of water don’t soak through the socks. I have a feeling that these socks with Scheepjes Mighty would be perfect for that.

Ik geef toe, het is misschien wel een gek idee om sokken te maken met jute erin. Maar ik denk echt dat het hele fijne sokken zullen zijn! Ik zal je iets verklappen, ik houd namelijk erg van voetbaden en voetscrubs. Erna trek ik altijd gelijk een paar sokken aan, en dan het liefst een zo dik mogelijk paar zodat enige overgebleven waterdruppeltjes niet gelijk de hele sok doorweekt maken. En ik heb een gevoel dat sokken met Scheepjes Mighty perfect zijn hiervoor. 

To add to the ‘scrubbing’ effect of jute, I am planning to knit the socks in a textured pattern. I knit up a little swatch using a different colour of Scheepjes Mighty that I still had at home. The white colour is called ‘Volcano’, and the blue colour is called ‘River’. I’m eager to get to work, so I will report back soon! Check back next week to see if I have made any progress.

Om nog extra toe te voegen aan het ‘scrubbende’ effect van jute, wil ik de sokken in een textuurpatroon breien. Hierboven zie je al een klein proefje dat ik maakte met een andere kleur van Scheepjes Mighty. De witte kleur heet ‘Volcano’, en het blauw heet ‘River’. Ik sta al te popelen om te beginnen, dus ik zal jullie snel weer een update geven. Kijk volgende week terug of ik al vooruitgang heb gemaakt.
