Timber Cowl and Wristies – Free Crochet Pattern

Free pattern time! I’m so excited to share the Timber Cowl and Armwarmers pattern with you, not only because this cowl and armwarmer set is really quick and fun to make, but also because it features my very own ‘New Leaf’ colourway from the Scheepjes Our Tribe yarns. I’m so proud and naturally wanted to design something pretty with my colourway. I hope you like it!

The Timber cowl and armwarmer set is designed to be made from just one ball of Scheepjes Our Tribe yarns. I was quite surprised myself that I could crochet so much out of just one 100 gram ball! And just in case you’re worried to run out of yarn, start with the armwarmers first as it’s kind of important to make those of the same lenght, and make the cowl afterwards. I’ve made the cowl to be quite long and it would totally still work if you make it a little bit shorter, or just until you run out of yarn! How satisfying is that, to use up the entire ball of yarn? Well, it sure is satisfying to me!

Gauge // Draadspanning

21 sts x 11 rows measures 10x10cm square

Met 21 steken x 11 rijen heb je een 10x10cm vierkant

If you do not reach gauge, try a different hook size. It is important to get the same gauge so the sizing is correct.

You will need // Materialen

Scheepjes Our Tribe in your preferred colourway, I used 1 ball of New Leaf (964) / 70% superwash merino, 30% polyamid, 100m-420 meters
Hook size to get gauge – I used 3mm, which is in between a C and D US hook size.
Scissors
Measuring tape to measure your own hand and your gauge

Timber Armwarmers

For the armwarmers, you’ll start at the fingers and work towards the arm. Finished, they will come about halfway across your forearm. The armwarmers are available in two sizes: small and large.
Small size will fit 16,5cm to 18cm handpalm circumference.
Large size will fit 19cm to 21cm handpalm circumference.
Please make sure you are obtaining the right gauge with your yarn and hook, otherwise the size will be different!
Instructions for the two size options are given as follows: (small/large)

Chain (35/42) sts, sl st in first ch st to join in the round, make sure the chains are not twisted.

Rnd 1. Ch1 (does not count as st), sc in each ch st around, sl st in 1st sc (35/42 sts)
Rnd 2. Ch3 (counts as st throughout), 1dc in the back loop only of each sc around, sl st in 3rd ch st of beg rnd.
Rnd 3. Ch3, 1dc in the back loop only of each dc around, sl st in 3rd ch st of beg rnd.
Rnd 4-6 repeat Round 3
Row 7. Turn work, ch2 (counts as first hdc), 1hdc in front loop only of each dc.
Row 8. Turn work, ch3, 1dc in both loops of each hdc.
Rows 9-12 Repeat Rows 7-8 two times
Rnd 13. Sl st in 3rd ch st of beg last row to join in the round again. Ch3, 1dc in back loop only of each dc around, sl st in 3rd ch st of beg rnd.
Rnd 14-18 Repeat Round 3
Rnd 19. Ch3, 1dc in st at base ch sts (= 1 st inc.), 1dc in back loop only of each dc around, sl st in 3rd ch st of beg rnd. (36/43 sts)
Rnd 20. Repeat Round 19 (37/44 sts)
Rnd 21. Repeat Round 3
Rnd 22. Repeat Round 19 (38/45 sts)
Rnd 23. Repeat Round 19 (39/46 sts)
Rnd 24. Repeat Round 3
Rnd 25. Ch1 (does not count as st), 1sc in st at base ch st, 1sc in back loop only of each dc around, sl st in 1st sc of beg rnd. (40/47 sts)

(36/43 stkn)
T20. Herhaal T19 (37/44 stkn)
T21. Herhaal T3
T22. Herhaal T19 (38/45 stkn)
T23. Herhaal T19 (39/46 stkn)
T24. Herhaal T3
T25. 1l, 1v in stk aan de basis van de 1e losse, 1v in de achterste lus van elk st, hv in de 1e v aan begin toer (40/47 stkn)

Break yarn and weave in ends. I usually block everything I make, but it isn’t necessary to block the armwarmers, especially if you’re worried they might be too baggy after washing. The Scheepjes Our Tribe yarn didn’t grow that much after blocking so I was fine with it, just keep it in mind when using a different yarn.

Timber Cowl // colsjaal

Chain 105 sts, sl st in first ch st to join in the round, make sure the chains are not twisted.

Rnd 1. Ch3 (counts as st throughout), 1dc in every st to end, sl st in 3rd ch st of beg rnd.
Rnd 2. Ch3, 1dc in the back loop only of each dc around, sl st in 3rd ch st of beg rnd.

Repeat Round 2 until you have completed 35 rounds. Break yarn and weave in ends; wash and block.

Thank you so much for this pattern! I love that it is just one ball, and such a pretty pattern (and yarn).
I am going to Black Sheep Wool soon, so will get a ball of Our Tribe and make them.
May I ask: do the armwarmers start at the arm and work towards the fingers, or start at the fingers and work towards the arm?

Hello Trish, thank you for your comment! The armwarmers start at the fingers and work towards the arm. I’ll add this to the pattern 🙂

Hi there, beautiful yarn and pattern. I have both and looking forward to making them soon, but wanted to check which crochet stitch you used to make the gauge square as it does not indicate that.
    Many thanks, Hannah Green

Hi Hannah, thank you so much for your comment! The gauge is measured on double crochets (US terminology) – which is treble crochet in UK terms, crocheted through the back loops only. Happy crocheting! Carmen
