An Alternative for Judy’s Magic Cast On

Are you not a fan of Judy’s Magic Cast On? It won’t click, no matter how many times you’ve tried? Well, I’ve got good news for you because there are some alternatives for it. In this blogpost, I’m showing you an alternative cast on for the Scheepjes KAL cushions. Please note, this alternative won’t work for every instance where Judy’s Magic Cast On (JMCO for short) is used. But since we’re all preparing for the KAL and I’m seeing some people struggling with the cast on method, I figured you might like this!

Schrikt Judy’s Magic Cast On je af? Lukt het maar niet, hoe vaak je het ook probeert? Dan heb ik goed nieuws voor je, want er is een weg omheen! In deze blogpost laat ik je een alternatief zien voor bij de Scheepjes KAL 2022 kussens. Let wel op dat de alternatieve methode die ik hier noem niet werkt voor álle patronen die Judy’s Magic Cast On (JMCO in het kort) gebruiken. Maar voor de KAL kussens, waar we nu allemaal voor aan het voorbereiden zijn, is het prima. En omdat ik zie dat veel mensen worstelen met de opzet, dacht ik dat jullie dit vast op prijs zouden stellen!

What is Judy’s Magic Cast On? | Wat is Judy’s Magic Cast On?

Judy’s Magic Cast On (JMCO) is a way of casting on seamlessly for a project in the round. In the photo above you can see the cast on edge which as you can see gives a beautiful result. It is often used for knitting toe-up socks. We are also using it for the Scheepjes KAL 2022 cushion covers, and you can find the tutorial video here.

Judy’s Magic Cast On (JMCO) is een manier van opzetten die zorgt voor een naadloos begin voor een werk in het rond. In de foto hierboven kun je het mooie effect aan de opzetrand zien. Deze opzet wordt vaak gebruikt voor sokken vanaf de teen omhoog. We gebruiken deze opzet ook voor de Scheepjes KAL 2022 kussens, en je kunt de tutorial video hier vinden.

The alternative | Het alternatief

For the Sassenach KAL cushions, we are using the JMCO method because it creates a nice seamless bottom edge of the cushions. Alternatively, you can also use the long tail cast on, which is probably the most common knitting cast on method out there. The downside to using the long tail cast on is that you will need to seam the cast on edge together later on, and that you will have a visible seam. If that doesn’t bother you, please read on!

Voor de Sassenach KAL kussens gebruiken we de JMCO methode omdat het een mooie naadloze onderrand geeft van je kussens. Als een alternatief kun je ook de duim-en-wijsvinger opzet gebruiken, de meest gebruikte opzet voor breien. Het nadeel hiervan is dat je later de onderkant nog aan elkaar moet naaien, en dat de naad zichtbaar zal zijn. Als dat geen probleem is voor je, lees dan verder!

Step 1: Cast on your total number of stitches with the long tail cast on, onto circular needles. If you are not familiar with this cast on, I have a tutorial video in Dutch. I might someday have the time to record an English version, but for now the visuals of this tutorial will do.

Stap 1: Zet je totale aantal steken op met de duim en wijsvinger methode, op rondbreinaalden. Vind het tutorial filmpje hier.

Step 2: Move your stitches onto the cable of your circular needle. Step 3: Divide your stitch count in half, pinch the cable together and pull out a loop from the center of your stitches.

Stap 2: Schuif de steken naar de kabel van je rondbreinaald. Stap 3: Verdeel je steken door de helft, knijp de kabel samen en trek een lus van de kabel tussen je steken uit.

Step 4: Take the needletip where the yarn (going to the ball) is hanging from, so where your last cast on stitch is, and slide it out of the stitches so that the stitches are resting on the cable. Bring both needletips together and start knitting in the round.
PLEASE NOTE: If you plan to use this alternative cast on for the Scheepjes KAL 2022 cushions, I advise adding 1 more stockinette round to the beginning of your cushion before the start of the first colourwork chart, because the seam will ‘eat up’ a bit of the length.

Stap 4: Neem de naaldpunt waar het garen (dat naar de bol gaat) aan vast zit, dus waar je laatst opgezette steek is, en schuif deze punt uit de steken zodat de steken op de kabel rusten. Breng beide naaldpunten samen en brei in het rond verder.
LET OP: Als je van plan bent deze opzetmethode te gebruiken voor de Scheepjes KAL 2022 kussens, dan raad ik aan om 1 extra toer tricotsteek aan het begin toe te voegen, vóórdat je met het jacquard breien begint. Het aan elkaar naaien van de onderkant neemt namelijk wat lengte in beslag.

Avoiding ladders | Ladders vermijden

To avoid ladders on the side of your work, hold the cable cord to the left needletip with your index finger. Hold it like that for the first two stitches of that needletip.

Om ladders aan de zijkant van je werk te vermijden, houd je de kabel met je wijsvinger tegen de linker naaldpunt. Houd het zo voor de volgende twee steken.

Step 5: Knit a couple rounds of your project. The colourwork chart I’ve used for this swatch comes from my ‘Bloem’ Sock pattern. Step 6: Turn your work inside out.

Stap 5: Brei een aantal toeren van je project. Het kleurwerk schema dat je hier ziet komt van mijn ‘Bloem’ sokkenpatroon. Stap 6: Keer je werk binnenstebuiten.

Step 7: Sew the cast on edge closed with the yarn tail hanging from the beginning.

Stap 7: Naai de opzetrand dicht met het begindraadje.

And you’re done! There’s a neat little seam on the cast on edge now. PLEASE NOTE: If you plan to use this alternative cast on for the Scheepjes KAL 2022 cushions, I advise adding 1 more stockinette round to the beginning of your cushion before the start of the first colourwork chart, because the seam will ‘eat up’ a bit of the length.

En je bent klaar! Zoals je ziet heb je zo een mooie naad aan de onderrand. LET OP: Als je van plan bent deze opzetmethode te gebruiken voor de Scheepjes KAL 2022 kussens, dan raad ik aan om 1 extra toer tricotsteek aan het begin toe te voegen, vóórdat je met het jacquard breien begint.
