When I was in Spain, of course I had to go yarn shopping! Knitting and crochet is really big in Spain, so there are at least 10 yarn stores in the centre of Madrid alone. My boyfriend planned a yarn-tour for me to see a few stores! Too bad that most of them were closed during the siësta, which is usually from 2 to 5 pm. Luckily the last one, El Gato Negro, was open!
I had heard that El Gato Negro is a really cool place for yarn shopping, and it really is! The shelves are loaded with all kinds of wool. They are wound in skeins instead of balls, and the price on the tag is per kilo! Since the skeins are divided per 100 grams, that’s also the least you can buy. By the way, you can’t touch the yarns in the store, which seems to be quite normal in Spain. At the entrance they have tassels of all the yarns so you can feel how soft they are.
Luckily a girl in the store spoke English, but just in case you have to talk in Spanish, here’s a few words you can use:
Lana = wol/wool
Algodon = katoen/cotton
Ovillo = bol/ball
Madeja = streng/skein
Tienes.. = Hebben jullie.. / Do you have..
Cuanto cuesta.. = Hoeveel kost…/ How much does … cost
Ganchillo = Haken / Crochet
Punta = Breien / Knitting
Aguja = Naalden (ook haaknaalden) / Needles (also for crochet hooks
Puedo pagar? = Kan ik betalen? / Can I pay?
My boyfriend let me pick a few yarns, yay! Once you pick a skein, they will weigh it for you, which was really cool. I first chose these two skeins to make a pair of socks for my boyfriend. It was a 50/50 acrylic and wool mix, and it cost 60 euro’s per kilo, which translates to 3 euro’s fro a 50 gram skein. Not much cheaper than the yarn here in the Netherlands, but there were a few bargains in the store as well!
I also picked four 100% cotton skeins to knit a new summery top. I just love cotton for making clothes! I’ll be busy winding balls from the skeins for the next few days, and then I can finally do some test knitting! Have you ever bought yarn abroad?
