Iāve decide to write a new themed column, yay! So exciting š Itās called: Meet a Crafty Queen. I suppose I first have to explain what a crafty queen actually is. Well, Iāve named my blog after the most influential crafty ladies in my family. These fabulous women are my mom, who makes all kinds of crafty stuff; my aunt Ria, whose creations with tiffany glass and mosaics are truly amazing; and my aunt Ingrid, who has her own line of jewelry! You can follow her page PippaO on Facebook here. Without them, I would maybe never have started this blog, so it seemed like a good idea to name it after them.
Okay, enough with the sentimental stuff, haha š Because, not only were there crafty ladies in my past, but I find new ones every day since I started blogging. Today, Iām going to introduce one of them to you!
Without further ado, the first crafty queen we meet is Mei from Ice Pandora! Maybe youāve seen some stuff of hers on my blog, no wonder since Iāve been drooling over her craftiness for quite some time now! As a real all-round crafter, she doesnāt only crochet and sketch, but also makes wonderful things with Fimo-clay. Miniature cakes with strawberries and whipped cream on topā¦ itās enough to drive you wild! Like what you see? Treat yourself with some non-sugary goodness from her Etsy shop!
Because I liked her blog so much, and we both live in the Netherlands, I asked her if she wanted to meet sometime! I hoped I wouldnāt sound too creepy asking, haha, but luckily she also thought it was a great idea š We had an amazing time in the Dutch city Rotterdam. Shopping, treating our self with yummy foodies, crafting, oh and donāt forget the thrift shop! We found some treasures alright š But most of all, it was fun to get to know a fellow blogger/crafter. Even though you donāt really know each other, you have pretty much the same hobbies and experiences. For example, we both get stared at sometimes when we take out our cameras. Well, scuse us, but weāre bloggers! A blog simply isnāt complete without pictures, period. With so many things to talk about, the day flew by! First, we tried this amazing Salted Caramel Cupcake at a place called Ten to Three. It was definitely nom-worthy!
Then we went to a huge thrift shop, to look at all the lovely things other people discarded. Hmm.. that sounded much better in my head, lol. Look at these clocks! Oh and by the way, donāt you just love Meiās vintage looking camera? Itās so adorable! She recently made a cameralens-cover DIY here.
Okay, as much as I love thrift shops, I gotta wonder who would actually buy these old home trainers.
Cute cups everywhere!
I just love the determined look on Meiās face here, lol , as if sheās thinking: āIāve GOT to have those!!ā Too bad there werenāt any crochet hooks.
Time for someĀ haul-pictures!! Take a look at this yummy embroidery thread! Oh my god, Mei and I were so happy when we came across it! It was an entire embroidery-pack, complete with the white fabric and pattern. We didnāt care much about the pattern itself, so we just divided the thread between ourselves, and only paid 75 cents each!! This kind of haul just makes me smile all day long šĀ
I also bought some new embroidery fabric, I think itās called Aida in English.. This kind of fabric really helps to get your lines straight and even! There were also some cute embroidery patterns included. I got all of this for 2,50. I know, more expensive than in the thriftshop, but itās cheaper than when you buy this at craft stores.
Just LOOK at these!! They are just gorgeous ^^ Always wanted to have huge spools like these. There were a bunch of them in the thrift shop, too bad I couldnāt take them all home! But I musnāt be too greedy.. and my bags were already quite heavy! But I didnāt just buy these for room decoration, I was planning to knit with both threads. I have this shirt thatās knit with very fine thread, maybe I can make something like it. I made a swatch, but the edges are curling up like mad.. But since that just happens with stockinette stitch, Iām not gonna give up just yet.Ā
I also bought some cute midi rings (yes, the kind that only fits around the middle part of your finger, or in my case, also my pinky), and a woolfelt-kit! Really excited to try this out, I wonder if I can get it to look pretty the first time!
Whew, that was an exhausting shopping trip! We had lunch at this cool restaurant called Vapiano. Basically, itās like a very fancy canteen. You have to get your food at the counters, but in turn you can stay and lounge as long as you want. Perfect for crafty get-togethers. We had some lovely pumpkin soup š
Mei and I had brought a gift for each other! I got Mei a crocheted red kitty cat, and she brought one of her awesome cheesecake rings for me! With tiny strawberries on top! I love it, itās so cute š She also got me some Asian candy and a green tea cookie, which was delicious! Thank you so much Mei! š
Mei also brought her sketchbook, and there were a lot of beautiful drawings inside! Sheās really good at drawing faces, and letās be honest, isnāt that the hardest part? I can never get a nose to look pretty, lol š And those houses! Those cupcakes! So cute~
We had a bubble tea at this place called Boguette (they also have Vietnamese baguettes, hence the name). I chose the Red Bean Milktea, and it was deeeeeelicious! I just love red beans (azuki beans), they are so sweet š They usually donāt have this flavour in the Netherlands, so I was really happy to finally get to drink one again. This one was really creamy, which I really liked. Mei ordered a Matcha Milktea, and she wasnāt a fan of the creamy texture. I guess it depends whether you want a milktea to be more like milk or more like tea.
We went to a kind of craft store after that, the kind that has paint, pencils and paper. They also had miniature figures, like trees, boats and other vehicles. It kind of reminded me of those Lord of the Rings miniatures you have to paint yourself and play games with. Only these miniatures were much (MUCH) cheaper.Ā
Finally a picture of my Rilakkuma bag I bought in China, Iāve been meaning to show it to you guys for a while!
After that, we ate at a Korean restaurant, Gamasot. It was a really small restaurant, so we had to wait a while till they had a table available. But the food was really good! And very friendly for a studentās wallet as well š Luckily they had a few vegetarian dishes, since Mei doesnāt eat meat. One of these dishes was Korean dumplings, which you can see above. So yummy! On the menu (also above) they were calledĀ dumblings, hahaha! I hope they didnāt destroy any of my brain cells, lol. Fun fact: Mei and I both speak a variety of Chinese! But Mei speaks Cantonese and I speak Mandarin, so we still couldnāt understand what the other one said. We taught each other some words, although I forgot most of them.. I do still remember thatĀ hongmei is the Cantonese word for āyummy!ā. The Mandarin word isĀ haochi (how-chuh).Ā
And all too soon it was time to go home. What a great day we had!! I have to say, I was kind of nervous before. Meeting a new person always makes me worry: what if we donāt have that āclickā, or we donāt have anything to talk about? But now, I donāt know why I was worrying so much. Mei is such a sweet girl and we had an amazing time! In the end, the problem wasnāt running out of things to say, but running out of time! Weāll definitely meet up again and craft some more š Oh, and if you want to see more pictures of today, go and take a look at the blogpost Mei wroteĀ here.Ā
