Scheepjes CAL 2016 – 'my' week 6!

Yay, it’s ‘my’ week of the Scheepjes CAL 2016! I’m enjoying it so much to see everyone’s blanket growing, and I’m very curious to see what you think of my square design. In this blogpost I’ll share how this square came to be, and what it means to me.

Week_06_Square_Carmen

I used the ‘corner to corner’ – also called c2c – technique for my square, where you work in diagonals from the one side to the other. My first idea for the square was totally different actually. Last year, when we were all brainstorming our ideas for the squares, my fellow designers came up with the most gorgeous stitch patterns. I had my mind set on a very challenging one as well. But no matter how I tried, I couldn’t get it in the desired size. I told Jellina – one of the other designers – about this, and she suggested the c2c stitch to me. Simple but beautiful, the texture would really complement the other squares in the blanket! I usually tend to go about things the hard way, and sometimes I forget what a relief it can be to enjoy the simple things.

The texture of the corner to corner stitch makes me think of sand. When I was little, my parents used to take my brother and me to the sea. I didn’t go swim in the sea – no sir – I played in the sand for the entire day! Drawing lines in the sand, making moats around my castles with the water from the sea, burying my feet in the sand, I loved it! Those are the memories this square brings out for me.

I think the simplicity of this square will add some serenity to the blanket, and really lets the more complicated squares shine. If you want to add some more interest to these squares, they are very easy to spruce up with a bit of colour work. Remember the pixel blankets? It would be fun to add a little motif in your square, let it be your canvas! Happy crocheting!

  1. […] We’re halfway through the squares! Can you believe it? That means that after this week you will have a nice big stack of 24 squares. That also means there are yet 6 more weeks of patterns to come! This week we’re going to dive into the Corner-to-corner (C2C) square that Carmen from Crafty Queens designed. It’s a lovely technique to do and it works up pretty fast! It’s a wonderful addition to the already textured blanket. Carmen has written a blogpost with more info on her square here. […]

What a beautiful story! I love the beach and playing in the sand too – but did love to go in the water after – just to remove the sand from all the places it worked its way in to 😉 Thank you for a lovely square. I wonder if anyone will add a colour to it. I am going to do mine plain, but it would be lovely with a heart <3

I’ve not started your square yet but it looks lovely and I like the story that is behind it.
This is my first CAL. I love all the squares and appreciate all the effort that has gone into creating them and the CAL. I’m sure Wink must be smiling down on you all. Anne x

Thank you for this square. I have to confess that I used the sand colour last week so my squares will be green! I am very familiar with the stitch, I’ve never tried a motif though. My first attempt is too small so I will try again today.

I have just made my first one of these. And it’s my first time using this diagonal technique. I absolutely loved the process of making it and the look of it now it’s finished!! It really is my favourite so far in this CAL 🙂
