Crochet Rib Turban Headband – Free Pattern!

Crochet rib turban2

The past week I’ve been crocheting headbands non-stop! I’ve made four already, and couldn’t wait to share the pattern with you. The pattern has been tested a few more times so now I’m ready to share! It’s super easy and really quick too, you can make one headband in just a few hours.

Materials

You can pretty much use any type of yarn for this headband. My testers and me used a few different yarns, here are the used amounts and crochet hooks:
1,5 ball Scheepjes Stonewashed XL – 5mm hook
1 ball Scheepjes Merino – 5mm hook
1 ball Scheepjes Stonewashed – 4mm hook
1 ball Scheepjes Softfun Denim – 4mm hook

Speciale steken

Special stitches

In this pattern, we will use front-post and back-post double crochets (US), to create the ribbing texture. Front or Back post DC’s are not crocheted in the two loops (or V) on top of a stitch, but around the front or back of a stitch. In this pattern we’ll crochet around dc’s, so you’ll be crocheting around the ‘pillar’ of the dc, not the top part.

FPDC : Front post double crochet
BPDC : Back post double crochet

Het patroon

Haak 15+2 lossen

Rij 1 Haak 1st in de 4e l vanaf de naald, en 1st in elke volgende l, keer. (15 st)

Rij 4 2l, *1RstA, 1RstV, herh vanaf * NOG 2x, keer.

Rij 5 2l, *1RstV, 1RstA, herh vanaf * tot einde rij, keer.

Rij 6 2l, *1RstA, 1RstV, herh vanaf * tot einde rij, keer.

Rijen 7-8 Herh Rijen 5-6

The pattern

  1. Ch 15 + 2 (first dc). 1dc in 4th chain from hook, 1dc in each next ch. (15 dc)
  2. Ch2, turn, skip dc at base of ch2, *1FPDC, 1BPDC*, repeat till end
  3. Ch2, turn, skip dc at base of ch2, *1BPDC, 1FPDC*, repeat till end.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have a piece of approx. 27cm /20 rows long. End with a row 2. In the next rows we’ll work over half of the stitches.

   4. ch2, 1BPDC, 1FPDC, 1BPDC, 1FPDC, 1BPDC, 1FPDC, turn work
   5. ch2, *1FPDC, 1BPDC*
   6. ch2, *1BPDC, 1FPDC*

7+8 Repeat rows 5+6

Cut yarn and weave in end.

IMG_8302

– Right now you’ve crocheted one ‘strip’.

IMG_8305

Turn your work, attach yarn with either 2 chains or a standing double crochet.

IMG_8306

Then: 1FPDC, 1BPDC, 1FPDC, 1BPDC, 1FPDC, 1BPDC, turn work

Now there’s one stitch in the middle of your work which we didn’t use. We’ll increase 1 stitch later on to make up for this difference.

Now repeat rows 6 + 5 (in this order) two times. Both ‘strips’ are the same length at this point.

IMG_8308

Turn work and repeat row 6 one more time.

IMG_8309

Then, take the right hand strip and put it across the left hand strip. In the first 2 chains of the right hand strip, crochet: (1BPDC, 1FPDC). This may not look correct now but it will in the next row. Now we increased one stitch so we have 15dc again. Then *1BPDC, 1FPDC* till end row.

IMG_8310

Repeat rows 2 + 3 again until your headband is the right size. Make it a bit tight so it’ll still fit if it stretches after a while.

Crochet rib turban3

Sew or crochet the two ends together, you can use your preferred technique for this.

That’s it, your headband is finished! It’s fun to wear with the twist in front, or slightly to the side. If you’ve got the hang of the pattern you could try to adapt it for thinner or thicker yarn, with more or fewer pattern repeats. With an uneven number of stitches the pattern should work, just remember to leave the middle stitch unworked when dividing for the twist part.

I’d love to see your finished headbands, please share! You could share them on my Facebookpage or Ravelry, or tag me in an Instagram post! Happy crocheting 🙂

I think you meant to say 1 dc in 3rd chain from hook to start the headband, for 15 dc. I’m not sure, but do you turn at the end of rows 1 through 3? Also for the short rows you number 1-3, then say repeat row 5 & 6. I started the headband this morning then gave up when my end row didn’t end the same as yours for the short pieces that cross.

iI love your pattern, however, I’m wondering what the gauge should be…like, how many stitches per inch. Reason being, I have some yarn that’s a thinner type chenille with no wrapper around it stating it’s weigh etc….plus, I’ve been using an H hook. Everything looks too big maybe> It’s approx. 5″ wide. thoughts? ss very much.

    • October 25, 2016 at 2:43 pm — Reply

Hi Carol! Sorry I took so long to reply. I haven’t worked out the gauge since my headband does not measure 10cm in width. Basically, you crochet for as wide as you want it, if you just want it to cover your ears or a bit more. Hope this helps!

this looks lovely! do you think it would be possible to adapt the pattern to make it with Our Tribe? so it could be worn with the timber cowl and wristies

    • February 27, 2018 at 9:28 am — Reply

      Dear Pia,
What a great idea! The Our Tribe yarn is slightly thinner, but it could still work. You can make it wider by using more stitches, as long as it is an odd number. Try 19 or even 21 stitches for a nice size. Make sure to leave the middle stitch unworked when separating for the braided part.

    Hi,

I love this design! Unfortunately I am stuck with row 4,5,6. The photos don’t seem to match the written pattern. Row 5 is only 2 stitches and same as row 6. Can I just check that I have understood this correctly. Do the fpdc then go onto a bpdc or stay hooked on a fpdc?

    Thank you!

Hello Louise! For rows 5 and 6, the instructions to be repeated are between **, so repeat those stitches till the end of the row 🙂
