As promised, here is the new and improved version of my Santa pattern! When I wrote the first pattern, I was crocheting with acrylic yarn. When I switched to cotton yarn after some time, my new Santas turned out super tiny because the cotton was much thinner than the acrylic yarn I had used before. So I made some changes here and there, and now I’m ready to present my improved Santa pattern, which will give you a slightly bigger Santa. The ornaments made with the original pattern will be more suitable for gift tags and maybe for your mobile phone. Santas made with this new pattern will give you bigger ornaments, which are better to decorate your Christmas tree with. You will need yarn in red, white, black and light pink for the skin tone. For the beard, I used an acrylic yarn, because it’s fluffier. If you only use cotton that is fine too. Enjoy!
Used abbreviations (US)
sc = single crochet
sc2tog = single crochet two together
Het patroon:
Begin met rood.
1. Haak 6v in ring
2. 2v in elke v
3. *1v, 2v in de volgende steek*. Herhaal van * tot *
4-6 *1v*
Wissel nu naar lichtroze.
7-9. *1v*
Wissel naar wit.
10. *1v*
The pattern:
Start with red.
1. 6sc in magic ring
2. 2sc in every sc
3. *1sc, 2sc in the next stitch* Repeat from * to *
4-6. sc around
Switch to light pink
7-9. sc around
Switch to white
10. sc around
Time to decorate! Use some black cotton to sew the belt. You can see my method in the picture above. With the same thread, sew the eyes. I make each eye with two stitches on top of each other.
1. Haak 5 lossen
2. Keer om en haak 4 vasten
Make the beard:
1. Chain 5
2. Turn and sc4
3. Turn without chaining (ch) 1, and sc3. You will start in the second stitch for this.
4. Turn without ch, sc2
5. Turn without ch, sc1
Sew the beard onto your Santa-to-be.
Met rood:
11. *1v*
12. *1v, 2vsh*
13. *1v*
14. *2vsh*
Continue crocheting. Stuff the Santa when you’re at round 13.
With red:
11. sc around
12. *1sc, sc2tog*
13. sc around
14. *sc2tog*
If you want to make an ornament, you can attach the thread at this point. Go through the Santa from bottom to top, make a loop and go through it again. Make a knot at both sides. Then cut the red yarn and close your work by weaving through the remaining 6 stitches. Weave in the end.
And ta-dah, your first Santa is finished! If you like, you could attach a small bell to the bottom, like I did with my previous Santas. That makes them look even cuter! What do you think of this new pattern, do you agree that it’s improved? If there are any problems or mistakes in the pattern, please let me know. Also, I would love to see your crocheted Santas!
