Vandaag ga ik jullie verklappen waar ik dit mandje van heb gehaakt! Vinden jullie het ook zo spannend? Ik had jullie nog wat langer kunnen laten raden, maar ik zit zelf ook te springen om het te vertellen! Ik denk eerlijk gezegd dat niemand ooit hiermee heeft gehaakt..

Today I’m going to let you all in on my secret of the ‘mystery basket’ earlier this week. I couldn’t wait any longer to tell you, I’m really excited myself! I seriously think no one has ever used this to crochet before.

Hier is voorproefje van de ‘stof’ waarmee ik gehaakt heb, ik vond het gewoon te mooi om weg te doen. Ik zat al weken te zoeken naar oude t-shirts of kussenslopen waar ik garen van kon gaan knippen, maar ik vond niets dat ik kon verknippen. En toen viel mijn oog hierop.. Wil je weten waar het vanaf komt?

Here’s a sneak peek of the ‘fabric’ I was using. I thought it was too pretty to just throw away. For weeks I had been looking for old t-shirts or pillowcases I could use for making fabric yarn, but I couldn’t find anything. Then I noticed this.. Want to know where I got it from?

Tadaaa! Mijn PARAPLU! Jazeker, mijn paraplu. Hadden jullie niet gedacht he? Ik kocht deze paraplu bij de H&M, waar ze altijd zo’n leuke dessins hebben. Op een dag regende het, dus ik stak mijn paraplu op. Maar het waaide zo hard, en ik zat ook nog eens op de fiets, dat ik hem beter dicht kon doen en mijn muts op kon zetten. Anders waait hij nog kapot, dacht ik. Ik klapte hem in en hing hem aan mijn stuur. Toen gebeurde het heel snel! Ik ging over een drempel *ka-toenk*, mijn paraplu schoof uit (geen idee hoe je dit zegt, maar hij schoot uit de vergrendeling, zodat hij opeens een stuk langer is), en hij kwam tussen mijn spaken! Toen was mijn paraplu helemaal krom en onbruikbaar. Thuis gooide ik hem in een hoek van de kamer. Vorige week vond ik hem weer en had ik opeens een idee!

Ta-dahh!! My UMBRELLA! Yes, you heard me, my umbrella! Amazing right? Bet you didn’t think of that. I bought it at H&M a while ago, they have such cute umbrella’s there. One day when I was riding my bike, it was raining, but really stormy as well. So I thought, better not to use it, or the wind will bend the frame backwards. So I hung it on the handlebars and put my hat on. After a while, I rode over a speed bump, and my umbrella got caught in the spokes of my bike. It was bent (see picture), so totally useless. I threw it in a corner of my room, where I found it again last week. And then I thought of using the cloth!

Het eerste wat je doet, is het doek verwijderen van het geraamte van de paraplu. Er zijn verschillende touwtjes die je door moet knippen. Ik merkte dat het makkelijker was om van binnen naar buiten te werken. Op het laatst knip je het doek in het midden los van de knop. Je hebt nu een grote ronde doek met een gat in het midden. Knip ook de klittenbandsluiting van de paraplu af, maar bewaar het nog even.

First, you want to cut the cloth loose from the frame. There are several loops you need to cut. Work from the inside out, I noticed that that works best for me. Then, cut around the round thing in the middle (what’s that thing called anyway?). Also, cut of the velcro closure of the umbrella. Don’t throw it away though.

Tijd om te knippen! Begin in een hoekje, en knip een lange spiraalachtige strook, van ongeveer 2 cm breed. Let op voor eventuele gaten in het doek, probeer door deze heen te knippen. In ieder geval zodat ze niet in het midden van de strook zitten.

Time to start cutting! Start cutting in a corner, and keep going. You’ll want to have a big spiral of fabric, the strand about 2 cm wide (a bit smaller than 1 inch). If you have any holes in the fabric, try to cut through them (not around them).

Een paraplu heeft naden, en hier knip je doorheen. Pas op dat je er niet aan trekt, dan kun je de naden los trekken. Als dit gebeurt, naai het dan even vast. Straks bij het haken is het nog makkelijker om het los te trekken, maar het aan elkaar naaien is zo gebeurd. Of je legt er een knoop in, als je een beetje een ruig effect wil hebben.

An umbrella has seams, and you’ll be cutting through these. Try not to pull the fabric so they don’t loosen. If they do, sew them back together, or tie a knot if you would like a more ‘grungy’ effect.

Als je klaar bent met knippen, maak je er een bol van. Als de de ‘wol’ nog niet meteen gebruikt, kun je de klittenbandsluiting eromheen doen, zo wikkelt hij niet af. Dus hoe noemen we dit garen? We hebben al textielgaren, en in Amerika haken ze wel eens met plastic tasjes, wat ze dan ‘plarn’ (=plastic yarn) noemen. Om de een of andere reden denk ik niet dat de naam ‘umbrellarn’ aanslaat, haha 🙂 Heb jij een leuke naam?

If you’re done cutting, wind it up into a ball. If you don’t plan to use the ‘yarn’ just yet, you can put the velcro closure around it so the yarn stays put. So what do we call this ‘yarn’? I’ve heard ‘plarn’ (plastic yarn) before.. so… umbrellarn? Probably not the best name ever, haha. Let me know when you think of something fun!

Je haakt ermee zoals je met elke andere stof haakt. Het enige andere is dat je heel voorzichtig moet haken, omdat je anders de naden lostrekt. Dit is bij mij een aantal keren gebeurd. Naai het gewoon even losjes vast en je kan weer verder! Eenmaal gehaakt zullen de naden niet meer losschieten. Ik gebruikte een haaknaald van 12mm, maar een kleinere is waarschijnlijk beter. Mijn mandje is nog steeds heel buigbaar.

When you crochet with it, it’s basically just like crocheting with any fabric. But you have to be really careful not to pull too hard, otherwise the fabric will come apart at the seams. This happened a few times while I was crocheting, but you can sew it back together with just a few stitches. I used a 12mm hook, but you could use a smaller hook. My basket is still very flexible, although it doesn’t lose its shape.

En hij is klaar! Is het niet fantastisch, van paraplu naar een mandje! Eerder schreef ik een patroon voor een gehaakt mandje. Ik vond het altijd zo zonde om een paraplu weg te gooien. Als het slecht weer is zie je er overal wel een in de prullenbak liggen. “Maar wat kan je daar nou nog mee?” dacht ik toen. Nu hebben we een manier om paraplu’s te recyclen! Recycle jij ook wel eens spullen door ermee te haken?
